Creative Director/Art Director 2004-2017
Creative Direction / Brand Stratagy / Art Direction
Print media, meet social media. When I stepped into the creative director role at the magazine in 2011, the task was to take a then-50-year-old publication that was primarily focused on print into the fast-growing digital and emerging social media space while maintaining revenue and production of a monthly print magazine. With the idea of trying to capitalize on the highly successful print following/subscribership created in the last 5+ years.
As Art Director, when I started working with the magazine in 2004, the task was to rebrand a then-40-year-old legacy title into a top-performing magazine. Within three years of working on the title, along with an all-star editorial team, the publication became one of the most innovative and influential surf media outlets of its time, exceeding all competitors in distribution and sales.
13 years of making SURFING Magazine…
This portfolio is a WIP — too much to gather still and curate. Below is a sampling of magazine covers, layouts, and the last Surfing Magazine issue trailer. Although we did not know at the time, the March 2017/Volume 53 No. 3 issue was to be the last; we called the issue “Complete,” a fitting title for the legacy magazine.
A few of my favorite covers and layouts.
After years of directing issue trailers, our last issue happened to be the first one I built.
